As Sunbathers Fled Violence, Popular Image Depicts Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, has always considered the iconic coast as her own backyard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, like many local residents, detected pops ringing out across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching states. Stepping out of her home, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the road, speaking to a pair who had run up the slope soaked, she noticed someone coming up at her rear. The person was a rescuer, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the direction that the crowd was trying to get away from, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He’s running into something that certainly every instinct would instruct you to run in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully full throttle racing.”

An Iconic Image of Courage During Chaos

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous acts of valour in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, law enforcement and ambulance crews attending to many those hurt.

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many professional lifeguards, remarked that the crew acted heroically from the second the violence began right into late that evening.

“We have heard so many moving stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” stated a council representative.

“These individuals exhibit dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned beaches secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on that evening should be highly praised.
