Britain Prepared to Utilize Seized Russian Holdings to Fund Ukraine's War Effort
The British government is set to progress with employing the total value of seized Russian holdings to bolster Ukraine's war effort, PM Sir Keir Starmer has declared.
In a collective announcement, the officials of the Britain, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany emphasized that this unified step would escalate tension on Moscow's head Vladimir Putin and compel Moscow to engage in negotiations.
They further noted that the initiative would be executed in close cooperation with the United States.
United Kingdom sanctions have blocked in excess of £25bn of Russian resources since Moscow began its full-scale invasion against Ukraine in 2022. But, until now, money allocated to the Ukrainian government using Russian assets had exclusively been drawn from gains and dividends accrued on them.
Sir Keir assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the Britain, France, and Germany were in agreement in their aim to drive progress toward using the total worth of the frozen Moscow's national funds to halt hostilities.
He stated that additional restrictions over the next period would increase the strain on the Russian government.
This announcement comes after European officials gathered in Copenhagen last week to consider using frozen Russian funds for a €140bn credit to Ukraine.
Recently, President Donald Trump urged international partners to take or utilize seized Russian holdings, as reported by media sources.
The value of immobilized Russian holdings in the European Union is calculated to be almost €211bn.
Leader Zelensky urges the United Kingdom's Sir Keir Starmer to take part in the weapons procurement initiative
The Russian government executed widespread missile and drone strikes throughout the Ukrainian territory on that day, causing electricity outages in many areas of Ukraine's capital, the city, and several other zones.
Several persons were killed and at least 20 people were injured in the assault, Ukrainian officials reported.
In a post on social media after the attack, Zelensky stated that the premeditated assault targeted civilian and energy infrastructure.
"What is required is not empty words but firm measures - from the US, the European Union, and the seven nations - in providing defense mechanisms and applying restrictions," he emphasized.
"Every sanction decision diminishes the Russian war effort," Zelensky wrote, in a different message.
Additionally that day, Zelensky told the press he would encourage Sir Keir to join the weapons procurement scheme, under which alliance members buy weapons from the US to donate to the Ukrainian forces.
While applauding the United Kingdom's firm backing for Ukraine, he noted it should send a clear signal that it would take part in the initiative, as well as apply additional sanctions on Russia.
