British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes shortly after he presented his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
