Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An recent initialism surfaced a few months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to medical experts like paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for medical staff to treat a minor who has been bereaved of their whole family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy in many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs assert that atrocities are continuing. Authorities disputes these claims, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from competing in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems completely different.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. A contest that initially championed togetherness has devolved into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
