Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not pursuing a return to football management, explaining that it would be challenging to recreate the unique sense of purpose he encountered as head of the Three Lions.

The former coach expressed his intention to channel his attention toward supporting young people and combating what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook now prevalent in the country.

Pursuing Fresh Opportunities Outside of The Sport

During a broadcast discussion, Southgate was prompted regarding speculation linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and elsewhere.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he answered. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

A Passion for Positive Examples

Ahead of the release of his new title, his leadership-focused book, he shared that he is deeply committed about setting examples for young people, drawing on experiences from his time as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

Southgate maintains that his experience coaching England, during which the team shifted from being deeply unpopular to widely supported, holds broader applications.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he said. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Parenting and Shaping the Next Generation

Speaking from his experience as a father, he commented: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He continued: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Common Ground Above Division

Southgate asserted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often centers on division.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he said. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

The manager’s new release, the book Dear England, is scheduled to offer further insights on leadership and national identity based on his notable time in football.
