Ghostface Original Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Franchise with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a role you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.
A Triumphant Return for Fallon Characters
It has been established that three distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, despite dying in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a small appearance is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he received the offer from the original writer.
"I recall the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That moment is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now represented in every single Scream mask that appears every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fans
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved series.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's gonna work. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Abound
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a bizarre shared scenario. The chance of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of classic genre films, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
