During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
