This ignores the truth that Americans fought each other.”

According to his perspective, the revolution is a story that “generally suffers from excessive romance and idealization and lacks depth and fails to properly acknowledge the historical reality, all contributors and the widespread bloodshed.”

It was, he contends, an uprising that declared the world-changing idea of the unalienable rights of people; a bloody domestic struggle, pitting Patriots against Loyalists; plus an international conflict, continuing previous patterns of wars between imperial nations for control of the continent.

Burns additionally aimed {to rediscover the
