The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular series reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Fan Response
Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“It's like being an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Has the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to discard a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
