A comprehensive search and rescue operation is actively under way in the Caribbean region for a pair of missing sailboats loaded with relief goods traveling from Mexico to Cuba.

Military Search and Rescue Operations Launched

Mexico has sent navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were had on board at least nine total sailors, according to a military release.

The vessels had been scheduled to reach the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.

Context of Humanitarian Support to the Island

Cuba has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country endures widespread national electricity failures.

"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are fitted with appropriate navigational gear and signalling equipment," a spokesperson associated with the mission stated.

The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their embassy officials.

"We are co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Previous Aid Shipment

Previously that week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That boat, nicknamed "a modern Granma" in reference to the vessel in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the revolution in the mid-20th century, carried solar panels, medicines, infant formula, bikes and provisions.

Larger Geopolitical Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

International organizations have since warned of "dire" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries called off in Cuba amid power shortages.

Foreign policy measures have been ramped up over the past months, with comments from various officials underscoring the complex situation regarding bilateral relations.

Responding to certain statements, a senior government figure declared that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Indications suggest that initial phases of negotiations were initiated, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The naval forces affirmed it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to discover the vessels and guarantee the security of the crews.

To date, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
